WATER & WASTEWATER

OVERVIEW

The Egyptian water and wastewater sector is a critical driver of national development and international collaboration. With strong investment flows, this sector supports economic growth while offering numerous opportunities for global partners.

It spans areas such as the design and construction of advanced facilities and the supply of essential equipment like pumps, filters, turbines, and valves. A key highlight is the sector’s focus on seawater desalination, reflecting a forward-looking approach to resource management.

CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS

To tackle looming water scarcity, the Egyptian government has launched multiple investment projects to strengthen water infrastructure. With a future marked by reduced supply and growing demand, the focus is on increasing water reuse and seawater desalination, especially in coastal areas.

The Holding Company for Water and Wastewater (HCWW) aims to boost desalination capacity to 2.6 million cubic meters by 2037. Regional priorities include the Mediterranean Sea and Sinai Peninsula, with 63 existing desalination plants and plans for 39 more.

JOINING FORCES

The total investment volume in Egypt’s water sector is projected to reach approximately $50 billion by 2037, reflecting the government’s commitment to address water challenges and foster sustainable development.

KEY SECTORS

Key sectors within the water and wastewater domain include wastewater treatment, expansion of sewerage systems, agricultural irrigation, water desalination plants, and the construction of small dams to harness rainwater.

However, inefficiencies persist within the existing pipeline system, with losses ranging from 18% to 58% of the scarce water supply. Hence, prioritizing maintenance and modernization of water infrastructure is imperative to mitigate losses and enhance efficiency.
